The Bread of Life

“I AM THE BREAD OF LIFE; WHOEVER COMES TO ME SHALL NEVER HUNGER.” – JOHN 6:35

A homeless man sits outside a bakery every night, watching loaves being pulled from the oven. He has no money. One evening, the baker brings him a warm loaf. “No charge,” she says. He eats slowly, tears falling. He had forgotten what it felt like to receive something he did not earn.

The crowd asks Jesus for a sign. Their fathers ate manna in the desert. They want another miracle. Jesus corrects them: Moses did not give the bread. My Father gives the true bread from heaven. The bread of God comes down and gives life to the world. They still do not understand. “Lord, give us this bread always.” Then Jesus speaks: “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me shall never hunger. Whoever believes in me shall never thirst.” Like the homeless man who forgot how to receive, the crowd wants to earn what can only be given. They want a sign so they can trust. But Jesus offers himself—not a proof, but a person. Today, stop striving. Stop trying to be worthy. Come to him empty. He is not a reward for good behaviour. He is bread, freely given. Eat. Be satisfied.

A Journey of Reflection and Action
Take a quiet moment to release the need to earn God’s love, write honestly about where you are striving, meditate on Christ as your true bread, receive His grace in prayer, and gently remind someone else that His love is freely given.

Lord Jesus, You are the bread of life given freely for us; teach us to come to You without striving, to receive Your grace with humble hearts, and to rest in the fullness that only You can give. Amen.
