A Whisper of Faith

“If you had faith like a grain of mustard seed… it would obey you.” – Luke 17:6

A boy watched his father try to start a stubborn old lawnmower. After many failed pulls, his father stepped back, exhausted. The boy walked over, placed his small hand on the engine, and whispered, “Please start.” He then pulled the cord once. To their astonishment, the motor sputtered to life. It wasn’t strength that made it run, but the boy’s simple, expectant act.

When Jesus calls us to radical forgiveness and warns against causing others to stumble, we often feel the impossibility—like the father struggling with the engine. Our hearts echo the disciples’ cry: “Increase our faith!” Yet Christ shows that divine power does not depend on the size of our faith but on its sincerity. The mustard seed’s strength lies in its life, not its scale. Like the boy’s gentle, expectant pull, it’s not our might but our connection to God’s power that makes the difference. Take your tiny seed of trust—perhaps enough only to forgive one hurt or resist one temptation—and act upon it. God honours not the magnitude of our faith but the authenticity of our dependence on Him. Your whispered prayer, joined with obedience, can start what human strength cannot. Even a whisper of faith, planted in obedience, can move what feels immovable. Trust and pull once more.

A Journey of Reflection and Action

  • Journaling: Write down an area of your life that feels immovable. Reflect on what a “mustard seed” step of faith might look like there.
  • Scripture Meditation: Read Luke 17:1–10 slowly, focusing on verse 6. Ask God to show you what “trust and pull once more” means for you.
  • Sharing: Tell a friend or prayer group about a time you saw God move through small faith.
  • Group Discussion: Explore together how obedience often activates faith, even when feelings lag behind.
