When Healing Costs Control: Embracing God’s Freedom

“What have you to do with us, Son of God?” Matthew 8:29 –

A doctor enters a village ravaged by disease, curing the sick with a single pill. But when the local healers realize their remedies (and income) are now useless, they whisper, “Maybe he should leave.” The cure was free—but it cost them control.

In Matthew 8:34, Jesus had just delivered two men from unclean spirits—yet the townspeople, rattled by His power, “begged him to leave.” Why? His presence disrupted their patterns, threatened their comfort, and exposed what they were unwilling to surrender. Just like what the Doctor also faced with the village healers in the story, we sometimes resist the very help we need when it threatens our pride, control, or familiar routines. Jesus still walks into lives with healing in His hands. Will you welcome Him—or ask Him to leave? Let go of what’s holding you back. What He gives in return is freedom.

A Journey of Reflection and Action

After reflecting on the poster’s message, consider taking these actionable steps to deepen your spiritual journey:

  1. Journaling : Spend time writing about moments in your life where you’ve resisted change or help because it challenged your comfort zone. Reflect on how embracing that help could have led to greater freedom.
  2. Meditation on Scripture : Meditate on Matthew 8:34 and other passages about resistance to God’s will, such as John 6:60–66. Consider how these stories apply to your current situation.
  3. Share the Message : Discuss this reflection with a friend, family member, or small group. Sharing insights can strengthen your understanding and encourage others to reflect on their own responses to God’s guidance.
  4. Prayer Focus : Pray for discernment and courage to recognize when you’re resisting God’s healing touch. Ask for the strength to let go of control and embrace His plan for your life.
  5. Community Engagement : Join or lead a Bible study focused on themes of surrender and obedience. Engaging with a community can provide accountability and support as you walk through these reflections.
