“A prophet is not without honor, except in his own country.”
– Matthew 13:57
A celebrated surgeon returns to her old neighborhood clinic, offering free care. But the locals whisper,
“Isn’t this the girl who used to babysit our kids? Who does she think she is?”
Suspicion keeps them from trusting her expertise—even as others travel miles to see her.
Jesus’ own neighbors dismissed Him because they thought they knew Him: “Isn’t this the carpenter’s son?” (Matthew 13:55). Familiarity blinded them to the divine in their midst. Even today, we risk missing God’s work when it comes through ordinary people, quiet moments, or even our own struggles. Proverbs 3:5 warns, “Lean not on your own understanding”—because faith often defies human logic. Like Nazareth, our doubt can limit miracles (Matthew 13:58). But Scripture reminds us: “The Lord does not see as man sees” (1 Samuel 16:7). So, surrender your assumptions. The God who spoke through a burning bush still works in the mundane.
Today, ask: Where have I overlooked Him? Then watch with fresh eyes—His glory often hides in plain sight.
🧭 A Journey of Reflection and Action
Today, take a moment to journal ways you may have dismissed God’s presence because it appeared “too familiar” or ordinary. Meditate on Matthew 13:57, Proverbs 3:5, and 1 Samuel 16:7. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you see God in unexpected places—through people you often overlook or in situations you struggle to understand. Share this reflection with someone in your life who may feel unseen or unappreciated. You can also gather with a small group and discuss times when assumptions blocked God’s work in your life. Let this reflection open your eyes to divine moments hidden in plain sight.
