When Faith Does Not Demand a Sign

“WHY DOES THIS GENERATION ASK FOR A SIGN? TRULY I TELL YOU, NO SIGN WILL BE GIVEN.” – MARK 8:12

A father spends months building a wooden playhouse for his children. On completion day, his son inspects every corner, knocks on the walls, and asks, “But where is the receipt? How do I know it’s safe?” The father kneels. “You’ve watched me build it every day. Do you trust me or not?” The boy nods slowly and steps inside.

Like the son who already saw the work but still wanted proof, the Pharisees had witnessed countless healings yet demanded another sign. Their request was not an honest one but a test. Jesus sighs—deeply, sadly—and refuses. Faith cannot be forced by spectacle. James writes that the person who doubts is “like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind” (James 1:6). A double-minded heart cannot receive from God. Jesus does not perform for sceptics. He gives Himself, not a show. Today, do not wait for a dramatic sign to believe. Look at what He has already done: creation, Scripture, your own moments of grace. Trust is built slowly, like a child watching his father. You have seen enough. Step inside and trust the One who has never failed you.
