True Wealth

“A man’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.” – Luke 12:15

A man spent years building a collection of luxury watches.
Each new piece felt like a victory — proof of progress.
But as his shelf filled up, most stayed unworn, gathering dust behind glass.
One evening, while winding another expensive watch, he realised time itself was slipping through his fingers — the very thing he could never own.

Jesus confronts the foundational lie of materialism — that security and identity come from what we accumulate. The rich fool Jesus spoke of (Luke 12:15–21), like the watch collector, believed possessions could shield them from life’s fragility. Yet life itself, symbolised by the passing time on a watch, is a gift from God, not an asset to be secured.
True life is found not in the treasures we curate, but in the eternal relationship offered in Christ. He alone is our sure foundation in a world where everything else fades. The call is to repent of the “gospel of self-sufficiency” and become rich toward God — investing in prayer, charity, and love, the only inheritance that endures.
Our hearts rest where our treasure lies; let it be in knowing Him. True wealth is not what fills your hands, but what fills your heart with Him.

A Journey of Reflection and Action

  1. Journal – Reflect on moments when you’ve sought identity or comfort in possessions. What truth did today’s reading reveal about lasting worth?
  2. Scripture Meditation – Spend time meditating on Luke 12:15–21; ask the Spirit to help you discern where your treasure truly lies.
  3. Act of Simplicity – Choose one unnecessary item to give away this week, as a quiet act of freedom from material attachment.
  4. Group Discussion – In fellowship, share how you define “true wealth” in Christ and how to live that truth practically.
