“THE SON OF MAN DID NOT COME TO BE SERVED, BUT TO SERVE.” – MATTHEW 20:28
A football captain lifts the trophy at the end of the season, but few see the early mornings, extra drills, and playing through injury. The applause lasted minutes; the sacrifice lasted months. The glory is visible. The cost was hidden.
Jesus speaks openly about His coming suffering — betrayal, mocking, and crucifixion. Yet immediately, the disciples think about positions of honour. They see glory; He speaks of sacrifice. Jeremiah also faced opposition for doing good, yet he entrusted himself to God (Jeremiah 18:19–20). True greatness, Jesus explains, is not about status but service. In God’s kingdom, leadership means humility. Psalm 31 reminds us to place our lives in God’s hands, especially when misunderstood. Lent exposes our quiet ambitions. Do we want recognition, comfort, or influence? Or are we willing to serve without applause? Christ shows us the pattern: give yourself to others. The path may cost more than expected, but it leads to life. Today, choose service over self-promotion. That is the way of Christ.

Lord Jesus, You came not to be served but to serve. Free me from the desire for applause and teach me the joy of humble service. Help me to give myself generously, trusting that You see what others may not. Amen.
