The Spirit of the Lord Is Upon You

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me.” – Luke 4:18

A firefighter, off-duty and out of uniform, hears a crash and sees smoke. He runs toward the danger without hesitation. Using his training, he guides bystanders, puts out flames with a nearby extinguisher, and helps the injured until help arrives. His purpose was not defined by his uniform, but by his readiness to act when the need arose.

In the synagogue at Nazareth, Jesus announces His mission by reading Isaiah’s prophecy: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me.” He shows that this anointing is meant for action—to bring good news, freedom, and healing (Luke 4:18–19). When He says, “Today this Scripture is fulfilled,” Jesus reveals that God’s promises are alive and present in Him. That same Spirit is given to all who believe and equips us for our mission in the world. As 1 John 5:1–4 teaches, those born of God overcome the world through faith and love. Loving God is shown by keeping His commandments, which are not heavy burdens but are lived out through loving service. You carry this same Spirit. Your mission is where you are today. Let God work through you to bring grace, freedom, and healing to others.
