“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” – Matthew 11:28
A gardener struggles to carry too many heavy pots at once. Each step strains his back, and he’s on the verge of collapsing. Seeing this, the homeowner rushes out—not to point, but to bring a sturdy wheelbarrow. “Let me help you. You don’t have to carry it alone,” she says gently. Relief floods his face as he transfers the pots, the weight instantly easing.
Jesus’s invitation reveals God’s response to our human exhaustion. He doesn’t shout instructions from a distance; He draws near, sees our struggle, and offers to share the load. His command, “Take my yoke upon you” (Matthew 11:29), is like the homeowner providing the wheelbarrow—a tool that transforms a crushing burden into a manageable task by bearing the weight together. This is the heart of the Gospel: we are not meant for solitary striving. Our weariness—from sin, worry, or duty—finds relief only in yoking our lives to His gentle and humble heart. The promise of “rest for your souls” is not a life without labour, but a life where the burden is shared with the One whose “yoke is easy” and whose “burden is light” (Matthew 11:30). What are you carrying alone today? Bring it to Him. You don’t have to carry it alone.
