“Freely you have received, freely give.” – Matthew 10:8
A landowner planned to visit his remote, overgrown property. Before his arrival, he sent a steward ahead. The steward’s sole job was not to redecorate the house, but to clear the winding, blocked road that led to it—removing fallen branches, filling ruts, and marking the way so the owner could arrive without hindrance.
John the Baptist’s message defines a core purpose of this season: we are called to be spiritual pathmakers. His cry, quoting Isaiah, is to “prepare the way”. This preparation isn’t about external observances but the intentional, humble work of the heart—producing the “fruit of repentance” (Matthew 3:8). It means removing the debris of pride, complacency, and sin that twists our lives and obstructs God’s presence. John’s warning is stark: relying on spiritual heritage or routine is empty without this authentic inner change, for “the axe is laid to the root” (Matthew 3:10). Our task is to clear the path for Christ to enter our lives more fully. As you examine your heart, remove what hinders, and align your will with His, you create a straight path for the King to enter. This is the transformative work that truly prepares us to receive Him.
