“Perfect love casts out fear.” – 1 John 4:18
A father teaches his child to swim, supporting her in the deep end. When she panics, he holds her close and says, “I’ve got you. Look at me.” Her eyes lock on his calm, sure face. The terrifying water is still there, but her fear dissolves in the security of his embrace, and she begins to move freely, trusting he will not let her sink.
John teaches that God’s love is not sentimental or fragile but powerful and transforming. Perfect love drives out fear because fear thrives where trust is absent. As we remain in God and openly confess Jesus as His Son, His love takes root in us and reshapes how we see ourselves, our circumstances, and even God Himself (1 John 4:15–16). Fear distorts vision, causing us to misinterpret God’s presence as a threat rather than a rescue. We see this in the Gospel when the disciples, overwhelmed by the storm, are afraid not only of the wind and waves but also of Jesus as He draws near. Yet He speaks peace to them: “Do not be afraid” (Mark 6:50). When fear grips your heart, turn toward Christ instead of withdrawing. Stay close to His love, remember that He holds you securely, and let His perfect peace flow through you to others.
