“The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed…yet it grows into the largest of garden plants.”— Matthew 13:31–32
A science teacher gave each student a tiny lithium battery — no bigger than a sunflower seed.
“This powers nothing today,” she said. “But stack 5,000 together?”
She showed a video of the same batteries running a hospital generator during a blackout.
The class gasped as the screen flashed:
“Mighty things grow from small beginnings.”
Jesus’ parables in Matthew 13 call for wholehearted devotion. Like the man who “sold all that he had and bought it” (Matt 13:46), we’re invited to see God’s Kingdom as a treasure worth every sacrifice. That man gave up everything—not out of loss, but for the joy of gaining something far greater. True value often comes at a cost. This challenges us to ask: What are we holding onto that’s keeping us from fully embracing Christ? As Paul declared, “I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord” (Phil 3:8). Following Jesus may mean releasing comfort, time, or status—but the reward is eternal.
Are there ‘pearls’ in your life holding you back?
What might God be asking you to surrender today?
A Journey of Reflection and Action
Take time today to journal what “small beginning” God may be using in your life for something greater. Meditate on Matthew 13:31–32 and Philippians 3:8, asking the Holy Spirit to reveal anything you’re clinging to that hinders full devotion. Share this reflection with a friend or small group, inviting others into a conversation about sacrifice and spiritual growth. You might also write down one small act of surrender you can make this week—whether it’s your time, attention, or comfort zone—to align more fully with Christ’s calling. Let this be a seed of transformation.
Join Us in Prayer
Lord Jesus,
You see what we overlook—the power of small seeds, the beauty of surrendered hearts. Teach us to value Your Kingdom above all else. Help us let go of the things that hold us back from full devotion. May our little acts of obedience be multiplied by Your Spirit into something great and eternal. Amen.
