“But Mary kept all these things, pondering them in her heart.” – Luke 2:19
A new homeowner receives the house keys and pauses before entering. Instead of rushing to decorate, she walks each room slowly, noticing light, creaks, and silence. She hasn’t changed anything yet. By taking time to receive the space as it is, she begins to understand how the house will become a home over the coming months.
The ancient blessing from Numbers—that God’s face would shine on us—finds its answer in the face of a child, God incarnate, dwelling with us. Mary’s response to this mystery is our model. Amidst the shepherds’ exciting news, she didn’t rush to analyze, but “kept all these things, pondering them in her heart” (Luke 2:19). Her quiet reflection teaches us that faith requires both action and deep, prayerful contemplation of God’s gifts. In Galatians 4:4-7, through Christ we are adopted as God’s own children, heirs of His promise. At the start of this new year, imitate Mary’s contemplative heart. Before charging ahead, pause to receive and treasure God’s love for you simply. Let this quiet pondering ground you. From this place of grace, you will move forward, like the shepherds, glorifying and praising God for all He has done.

A Journey of Reflection and Action
As the new year begins, pause today in quiet stillness to receive God’s presence as Mary did, journal the “things” from the past year—joys, mysteries, and graces—that you wish to ponder in your heart, meditate slowly on Luke 2:19 and the gift of contemplative faith, pray for a heart that treasures God’s love simply before acting, and share one treasured moment of grace with someone to invite them into this same gentle pondering.
Join Us in Prayer
Loving Father, on this first day of the new year, we thank You for the example of Mary, who kept and pondered all things in her heart, receiving Your Son with wonder and quiet trust. Grant us her contemplative spirit: help us pause amid life’s rush to treasure Your love, adopt us anew as Your children through Christ, and fill us with grace to move forward in praise and glorification of You. May our lives reflect the steady light of Your face shining upon us. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
