“LEAVE HER ALONE, SO THAT SHE MAY KEEP IT FOR THE DAY OF MY BURIAL.” – JOHN 12:7
A woman visits her elderly father in a care home. He no longer recognises her. She brings his favourite sweets, though he can’t taste them. A nurse asks why she keeps coming. She smiles: “Because he gave me everything when he knew who I was. Now I give him everything, even when he doesn’t.”
Mary takes a year’s wages’ worth of perfume and pours it on Jesus’ feet. She wipes them with her hair—a gesture of utter devotion, utterly wasteful in the eyes of Judas. He calls it extravagance, hides greed behind concern for the poor. But Jesus defends her: “Leave her alone.” He sees what others miss. Mary is anointing him for burial. She loves now, before the cross makes love impossible. Jesus is that servant, walking toward his death. Mary fears nothing—not waste, not scandal, not what others think. She pours out everything because she knows who he is. Today, what are you holding back? What gift are you calculating, waiting for the right moment? Love doesn’t wait for perfect timing. Love pours out now before it’s too late.
