“The Son of Man came not to be served but to serve”— Matthew 20:28
At a crowded food bank, a CEO works beside a teenager, both wearing the same volunteer apron. “Why are you here?” the teen asks. The CEO smiles: “The higher you climb, the lower you kneel.” Later, the teen notices—the CEO isn’t just serving meals; he’s learning every guest’s name.
Jesus’ words flip worldly ambition on its head—true greatness kneels low. James, once bold enough to ask for a throne, learned through following Christ that real honor flows from humility. History remembers him not for status, but for sacrifice—he became the first apostle to give his life for the Gospel. Like the CEO in our story, James shows us that leadership isn’t about control but compassion—being fully present, remembering names, lifting burdens, and choosing love when no one’s watching. These quiet acts shape us more into Christ’s likeness. Today, serve where it’s uncomfortable or unseen. That’s where God often hides—in places where pride surrenders, and grace takes root. Like James, may we grow from ambition to surrender.
A Journey of Reflection and Action
Take 10 minutes to journal how your definition of success aligns—or conflicts—with Christ’s idea of servant leadership. Meditate on Matthew 20:28 and James 1:22–27. This week, choose one hidden act of service—something unnoticed but meaningful. Share today’s message with someone who may be struggling with pride or performance, or discuss it with a small group. Let this reflection guide your next steps as a disciple shaped by humility.
Join Us in Prayer
Lord Jesus, You came not to be served but to serve—and in doing so, You redefined greatness. Teach us to kneel low in a world that chases high places. Strip us of pride, and fill us with compassion. May we remember names, lift burdens, and love when no one is watching. Shape our ambitions into acts of quiet grace. Help us serve like You served—deeply, humbly, and wholeheartedly. Amen.
