“IT IS FINISHED.” – JOHN 19:30
A firefighter enters a burning building after everyone else has left. His captain shouts, “Get out! The floor is about to collapse!” He goes on, finds a child trapped under a beam, and carries her out just before the roof falls in. Later, when asked why he stayed, he says, “I heard her crying. I couldn’t leave until I knew she was safe.”
Jesus enters the garden knowing what will happen. He does not hide. He asks, “Whom do you seek?” They answer, “Jesus of Nazareth.” He says, “I am he,” and they fall back. He could leave, but he stays. He protects his followers even as he is arrested. He is mocked, beaten, and crowned with thorns. Pilate says, “Behold the man.” The crowd shouts, “Crucify him!” Jesus carries his cross. He is nailed to it and hangs between heaven and earth. He asks for a drink and entrusts his mother to John. Then he says, “It is finished.” Not, “I am finished,” but, “It is finished.” The work of salvation is complete. Like the firefighter who stayed until the child was safe, Jesus stayed for you. He did not come down. He did not leave you. Look at the cross. It is finished. You are free.
