“I HAVE NOT COME TO ABOLISH THEM BUT TO FULFIL THEM.” — MATTHEW 5:17
A man bought a new piece of furniture and decided to assemble it without reading the instructions. At first it seemed simple, but halfway through he realised several parts were in the wrong place. Frustrated, he went back to the manual he had ignored. Following it carefully, the pieces finally came together as intended.
Many people approach God’s word the way the man approached the instructions—assuming they already understand enough. In Deuteronomy 4:1, 5–9, Moses urges the people to listen carefully to God’s commands because they lead to life and wisdom. The instructions were not restrictions but guidance from a God who desired their flourishing. Jesus echoes this truth in Matthew 5:17–19, explaining that He did not come to abolish the law but to fulfil it. Like the man who eventually returned to the manual, we discover that God’s ways bring clarity when we choose to follow them. Psalm 147 reminds us that God has graciously revealed His word to guide His people. Today, approach Scripture with humility and attentiveness. God’s word is not a burden but a path that leads us steadily towards life and wisdom.
