“God is love.” – 1 John 4:8
A master gardener discovers a barren, neglected plot of land. She doesn’t expect it to produce before she cares for it. Instead, she enriches the soil, plants strong seeds, and faithfully waters them. Only after this patient care do green shoots appear, eventually producing a harvest far greater than what she first planted.
In the words “God is love,” we discover the source and meaning of true love. The Apostle John reminds us that love does not begin with us; it flows from God’s own nature. We love only because He first loved us, shown most clearly in sending His Son for our salvation (1 John 4:7, 10). This initiating love is visible in Jesus’ ministry. When He sees a hungry crowd, He does not turn them away. Instead, He multiplies a small offering and feeds everyone (Mark 6:34–44). This miracle reveals God’s overflowing grace that meets need before it is earned. Remember today: you are loved first. You are the barren soil tended by the Gardener. As you receive His grace, your ability to love others will grow beyond measure, becoming a channel of His compassion to a hungry world.
