Faith Beyond Appearances: Letting Christ Write Your Story

“Woe to you, blind guides” – Matthew 23:16

A student spends hours decorating the cover of his notebook—drawing intricate patterns, adding colourful stickers, and making sure it looks perfect. But when exam day comes, he realises the pages inside are mostly blank. The cover was impressive, but the true test depended on what was written within.

Like the student who decorated a notebook cover but left the pages blank, we too can polish the surface of our lives while neglecting the content of our hearts. Jesus warns the Pharisees about elevating gold above the temple and ritual above reverence (Matthew 23:16–17). The danger is clear: when outward appearance outweighs inner truth, we miss the very One who gives meaning to worship. Are we investing more in looking faithful than in living faithfully? Do we care more about being seen as “good Christians” than about cultivating a genuine, private walk with Christ? He is not impressed by how polished we appear, but by whether our hearts are written with His love and truth. Real faith is not a decorated cover—it is a story authored by Christ within. Let Him fill your pages today; what He writes endures beyond appearances.

A Journey of Reflection and Action

  • Set aside time to journal honestly about whether your faith is more about appearance or intimacy with Christ.
  • Meditate on Matthew 23:16–17 and ask the Spirit to reveal areas where you might be prioritising image over truth.
  • Share your reflections with a trusted friend or group to encourage accountability.
  • Practice one hidden act of devotion this week that no one else sees but God.

Join Us in Prayer
Lord Jesus, write Your truth upon the pages of my heart. Guard me from the temptation of empty appearances, and lead me into authentic faith that pleases You. May my life tell a story authored by Your love. Amen.
