When Your Eyes Are Opened

“THEN THEIR EYES WERE OPENED, AND THEY RECOGNISED HIM.” – LUKE 24:31

A couple adopt a teenage girl from foster care. For months, she remains distant—polite, but guarded. One night, she wakes from a nightmare and calls out. They sit with her until morning, saying nothing, just staying. At dawn, she whispers, “No one ever stayed before.” Something changes.

Two disciples walk to Emmaus carrying disappointment, convinced the story has ended. Jesus joins them, but they do not recognise him. He listens, teaches, and stays when they ask. Only in the breaking of the bread do their eyes open. Like the girl who finally recognises love through presence, they come to see who has been with them all along. God often reveals himself not in sudden clarity, but in faithful closeness. Today, you may feel unseen, still waiting for something to change. But Christ is already walking with you, already staying. Invite him in. Let him remain. In the ordinary moments, in the quiet breaking, your eyes will open—and you will recognise him.
