“Unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.” – Luke 13:5
A mother watched her little son play too close to a busy road. She called out gently, but he laughed and kept going. Then she shouted—urgent and frightening. Startled, he stopped just as a car sped past. Trembling, he ran to her, crying. She held him tight, whispering, “I wasn’t angry—I just wanted to keep you safe.” Her shout was love in disguise.
That’s the heart behind Jesus’ words: “Unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.” His warning isn’t harsh—it’s mercy that refuses to stay silent. In Jesus’ parable (Luke 13:6–9), He speaks of a barren fig tree—given one last season of care before being cut down. The gardener’s plea mirrors Christ’s own intercession for us: “Give it time. Let Me work on it.” Repentance, then, is not punishment but invitation—an opening for grace to restore what sin has drained. God’s warnings are not threats; they’re love’s alarms before destruction sets in. Like that fig tree, we’re living on mercy’s borrowed time, sustained by a patience that still believes we can bloom. When Christ calls out, it’s never to condemn—but to rescue, to awaken, and to lead us back into life.
