Don’t Keep Your Gift in Its Case

“Well done, good and faithful servant… Enter into the joy of your master.” – Matthew 25:21

A young musician received a vintage guitar from her mentor. Afraid of damaging it, she kept it locked in its case. Another student, with only a secondhand ukulele, played daily for friends and at small gatherings. When the mentor returned years later, one showed an untouched guitar, the other offered a beautiful song. The true joy was not found in preservation, but in the music that was made.

Like the mentor who rejoiced in music, not in the preserved guitar, Christ delights when we use the talents He entrusts to us. In the Gospel, the master praises his servant with the words, “Well done, good and faithful servant” (Matt 25:21), showing that God values faithfulness in action over fear and hesitation. What matters is not how much we have received, but how courageously we put it to use. Scripture reminds us, “As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another” (1 Peter 4:10). We are called to actively invest our lives for the growth of His kingdom, trusting that even our smallest efforts bring Him joy. God does not demand great success, but faithful stewardship. Every gift expressed in love becomes a song that honours the Master, who delights in our faithfulness. Don’t keep your gift in its case—play it boldly for God’s glory today.

A Journey of Reflection and Action

  1. Journaling with a Prompt: Find a quiet space and reflect on this question: What are the gifts, talents, or resources God has given you? Write them down, big or small. Next, consider which of these gifts you might be keeping “in a case” out of fear, hesitation, or a sense of inadequacy. What is one small, practical step you can take this week to begin using that gift for God’s glory?
  2. Scripture Meditation: Read Matthew 25:14-30, the Parable of the Talents. As you read, imagine yourself as one of the servants. What emotions do you feel? Meditate specifically on verse 21: “Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!” Let the promise of this verse sink into your heart, replacing any fear with a desire to be found faithful.
  3. Sharing & Discussion: Share the message of this devotional with a trusted friend, family member, or small group. Discuss how the story of the two musicians relates to your own lives. How have you seen others use their gifts faithfully? How has it inspired you? This can be a great way to encourage one another to step out in faith and put your talents to use.

Join Us in Prayer

Heavenly Father, we thank you for the gifts, talents, and opportunities you have so graciously entrusted to us. Forgive us for the times we have allowed fear and hesitation to keep our gifts locked away. Fill us with the courage to step out in faith, to be bold in our stewardship, and to use every part of who we are to bring you glory. Help us to remember that our faithfulness is what brings you joy. May our lives become a beautiful song that honors you. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
