Come As a Child: Faith Without Pretence

“Unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.”Matthew 18:3

A famous chef visits a struggling soup kitchen.
Instead of giving advice, he kneels beside a 7-year-old peeling carrots. “Show me how you do it,” he says.
Her awkward peeling makes others uneasy—until they see the chef copying her exactly. Later, he says, “She’s the only one not trying to impress.”

Jesus calls us to trust like a child—not to impress, but to simply receive and follow. Like the famous chef who learned from a 7-year-old’s clumsy carrot peeling, God values honest love, not showy service. Children don’t strategize their worth—they just come as they are, open and humble. Jesus flips our values: the Kingdom belongs to those with simple faith and pure hearts. When God searches for His lost sheep (Matt 18:12), He seeks not the most impressive, but the one who stops pretending and trusts Him. Today, whatever feels complicated, try doing it like a child—with open hands and no need to impress. God delights in genuine faith and invites you to come just as you are.

A Journey of Reflection and Action

Take time today to reflect on what it means to come to God “like a child.” Spend 10 minutes journaling how you might let go of pretence in your walk with Him. Meditate on Matthew 18:3 and Matthew 18:12, inviting the Holy Spirit to reveal areas where you can trust more fully. Share the heart of this message with a friend or family member, and consider discussing it in your Bible study group. As you go through your day, practise one simple act of service without seeking recognition—just out of love for Christ.

Join Us in Prayer

Lord Jesus, teach us to come before You with open hands and pure hearts, just like a child. Strip away our pride, our need to impress, and our self-reliance. Fill us with the joy of simple trust, that we may follow You with humility and love. Amen.
