“He feared John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man” – Mark 6:20
At a corporate dinner, a manager knows a whistleblower speaks the truth. He listens privately, even admires the courage, but says nothing publicly. When pressure mounts and reputations are at stake, he signs off on the dismissal to keep the room comfortable. Applause follows, but unease lingers long after the tables clear. No one meets his eyes.
Herod recognises John’s holiness yet refuses to act on the truth he hears (Mark 6:20). Like a manager who silences a whistleblower to preserve approval, Herod values reputation over righteousness. Sirach recalls David praising God wholeheartedly, even after failure, because he feared the Lord more than human opinion (Sirach 47:8–10). Psalm 18 declares that God is a refuge for those who trust Him, not for crowds. John’s martyrdom reveals both the cost of speaking truth and the danger of delayed obedience. Knowing what is right is not the same as choosing it. The Gospel warns that half-hearted respect can still end in grave injustice. Christ calls us to courageous fidelity, not private admiration. Notice where fear of people mutes your conscience. Choose truth, even quietly. God sees faithfulness and strengthens those who stand with Him, even when the cost feels high.
