“Mary has chosen the good portion, which shall not be taken away from her” – Luke 10:42
A father spends the entire afternoon fixing a broken fence, ignoring his young daughter who sits quietly nearby holding a drawing she made for him. Finally, he kneels to admire her artwork, a moment of connection that nourishes their relationship more than the completed fence ever could.
Jesus gently reminds Martha that the one truly necessary thing is attentive presence with Him. Life’s demands often make us anxious and distracted, pulling us toward constant action. Our spiritual lives often mirror this: we prioritise doing for God (prayer tasks, ministry work) over being with God. Like Mary, we are invited to pause, listen, and receive His word, letting it shape our hearts before resuming our duties. This focus does not diminish our responsibilities but empowers them, as tasks performed from a heart rooted in God’s presence bear lasting fruit. Choosing the “good portion” daily—time in prayer, Scripture, or attentive reflection—anchors our soul, bringing clarity, peace, and spiritual nourishment that activity alone cannot provide. Set aside the urgent and embrace the essential. Be present with Christ today.

A Journey of Reflection and Action
- Journal: Reflect on moments when you were too busy to notice God’s presence. What might it look like to “pause and listen” instead?
- Meditate on Scripture: Read Luke 10:38–42 slowly, imagining yourself in Mary’s place at Jesus’ feet.
- Share: Encourage a friend to join you in a short “quiet pause” challenge this week—five minutes of stillness before God daily.
- Group Discussion: How can we balance serving God and being with Him in our daily lives?
Join Us in Prayer
Lord Jesus, quiet my restless heart and draw me into Your presence. Help me to choose what truly matters—to sit at Your feet, listen to Your word, and find rest for my soul. Amen.
