“However, not to give offense… go to the sea and cast a hook.”
– Matthew 17:27 –
A single mom hesitates to give her last ₦2000 at church but feels led to do it. Later that day, her car breaks down. After repairing it, the mechanic smiles and says, “No need to pay—your brother already covered it when he brought his truck last week.” The cost? ₦10,000—five times what she gave.
When collectors demanded the temple tax (Matt 17:24–27), Jesus didn’t panic—He sent Peter to catch a fish with the exact coin inside, proving God knows our obligations before we ask. It wasn’t really about money—it was about trust.
The miracle only happened after Peter acted. Faith isn’t passive; it’s casting your hook when the sea looks empty. God sees our needs before we even speak. Like the single mom who gave her last ₦2000 only to receive unexpected grace, Jesus shows us that obedience unlocks divine solutions. The miracle happened at water’s edge—where Peter’s skill met God’s sovereignty. Your own “temple tax” might be a tough bill, a strained relationship, or a big step of faith.
But don’t worry—if you obey, God has already prepared the fish. All He asks is that you cast your hook.
A Journey of Reflection and Action
Take a moment this week to reflect deeply on what it means to “cast your hook” in faith, even when the sea seems empty. Write in your journal about a time you trusted God without knowing the outcome. Meditate on Matthew 17:24–27, allowing its message of obedience and trust to shape your prayers. Share this message with a friend or your faith group, and discuss how stepping out in faith has led to unexpected blessings. Finally, commit to one tangible act of obedience this week—whether in giving, forgiving, or serving—trusting that God has already prepared the provision.
