“Whoever does not carry his cross… cannot be my disciple” – Luke 14:27
A young man dreams of becoming a professional athlete. He trains hard for months, but when a coach offers him a spot on a team, it comes with a cost—relocation, strict diet, and early mornings. He hesitates. His mentor quietly says, “You love the idea of winning—but are you ready for the grind?”
In Luke 14, Jesus speaks plainly: following Him is costly. “Whoever does not carry his cross and come after me cannot be my disciple.” (v.27). He’s not discouraging us—but preparing us. Discipleship is not a side project; it requires full-hearted surrender. Like the athlete who must embrace both glory and grind, we are called to take up our cross—not once, but daily—and follow Jesus into places of both suffering and transformation. What makes ordinary sacrifices sacred is doing them “for my sake.” Your cross might not be athletic training, but whatever daily dying-to-self God asks of you—that’s where discipleship becomes real. That daily sacrifice you’re making? The loneliness, the discipline, the unseen effort? This is your cross. Carry it well—the victory ahead is worth it (Hebrews 12:1-2). The question remains: Do we love the idea of Christ more than the call of Christ?
A Journey of Reflection and Action
- Journal today about what “cross” you may be called to carry—sacrifice, discipline, or unseen obedience.
- Meditate slowly on Luke 14:27 and Hebrews 12:1-2, asking God to reveal what surrender looks like for you.
- Share with a trusted friend or small group the challenges you face in following Christ daily.
- Discuss together practical ways to encourage one another in carrying your crosses faithfully.
Join Us in Prayer
Lord Jesus, strengthen me to carry the cross You’ve placed before me. Help me not just to admire You, but to follow You daily with courage, surrender, and faith. May I love Your call more than my comfort. Amen.
