“I have found David… a man after my heart” Acts 13:22 (ESV)

On a school sports field during training, the coach quietly pulls aside a quiet, respectful player—not the most skillful or fastest—and places the captain’s armband on his arm. The team looks surprised; many expected the most skillful player. But the coach saw something deeper: integrity, consistency, and a true heart for the team.

God’s standards are not like ours. God looks at the heart, not the appearance. David wasn’t perfect, but he wanted to do God’s will. When others chase visibility, power, or charm, God often chooses the overlooked—those who quietly obey and carry a servant’s spirit. God sees you, whether or not you shine. Be faithful where you are—He sees your heart and knows your name.

What do do

  • Consider a time when you felt overlooked. How did that experience shape your perspective on success or recognition?
  • What does “a true heart for the team” mean in the context of your own life or community?
  • How might focusing on God’s perspective of your heart change your daily actions?

Lifestyle Applications:

  • Identify one area where you tend to seek outward validation, and consciously shift your focus to serving God quietly.
  • Practice humility by celebrating the successes of others, even if you feel you’ve been overlooked.
  • Seek opportunities to serve in ways that don’t bring immediate public recognition.

Prayer Points:

  • Pray for a heart that seeks God’s will above all else.
  • Ask God to reveal areas where you might be seeking external validation.
  • Pray for the humility to serve faithfully, regardless of recognition.

  • 1 Samuel 16:7: “For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.”
