The Rejected Stone Becomes the Cornerstone

“THE STONE THE BUILDERS REJECTED HAS BECOME THE CORNERSTONE.” – MATTHEW 21:42

A builder sets aside a rough-looking stone, thinking it is useless. Later, another craftsman examines it carefully and realises it is the strongest piece in the pile. That very stone becomes the cornerstone that supports the whole building.

Joseph was rejected by his own brothers. Out of jealousy, they sold him, believing his story was finished. Yet God was quietly working through that painful moment to shape a greater plan (Genesis 37:28). In the Gospel, Jesus tells a similar story. The vineyard owner sends his servants, and finally his son, but the tenants reject and kill him. Jesus then reveals the deeper truth: “The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone.” Human rejection does not cancel God’s purpose. Often, the very thing people dismiss becomes the place where God’s work begins. Lent reminds us that God can transform betrayal, injustice, and suffering into something redemptive. When life feels unfair or misunderstood, do not lose hope. Trust that God still builds with what others reject. Remain faithful. He knows how to turn rejection into purpose.
