Choosing Mercy Over Judgment

“BE MERCIFUL, JUST AS YOUR FATHER IS MERCIFUL.” – LUKE 6:36

A teacher marks two pupils’ work. One made careless mistakes but tried hard. The other was capable yet lazy. The teacher chooses fairness and mercy, giving room to improve rather than simply punishing. The way she responds shapes how the pupils grow.

Daniel confesses plainly, “We have sinned and done wrong.” He does not excuse the people; he appeals to God’s mercy (Daniel 9:5,9). Psalm 79 echoes the same cry: “Do not deal with us according to our sins.” We live because God is merciful. In the Gospel, Jesus teaches that the measure we use for others will be used for us (Luke 6:38). If we judge harshly, we close our own hearts. If we forgive and give generously, we reflect the Father. Mercy is not weakness; it is strength shaped by grace. Lent invites us to examine how we treat others. Are we quick to criticise? Slow to understand? God has shown us compassion again and again. Today, choose to extend that same mercy. The way you measure others shapes the life you build.
