“EVEN NOW, SAYS THE LORD, RETURN TO ME WITH YOUR WHOLE HEART.” – JOEL 2:12
A small town receives a weather alert: a severe storm is expected to arrive within days. Some people laugh it off. Others take it seriously. They board up windows, clear drains, and move to safer ground. When the storm changes direction and weakens, the town is spared major damage. The warning was not given to frighten them, but to prepare them.
Jonah walks into Nineveh with a clear message: change your ways or face destruction. Surprisingly, the people listen. From the king to the poorest citizen, they repent. God sees their change of heart and shows mercy (Jonah 3:10). In the Gospel, Jesus says that the people of Nineveh responded to Jonah, yet many now ignore One who is greater than Jonah (Luke 11:32). Lent is our warning and our mercy at the same time. God is not eager to punish; He desires to forgive. Psalm 51 reminds us that what He truly wants is a humble and contrite heart. The call is simple: turn back now. Do not wait for a bigger sign. Today, examine your heart honestly, admit where you need to change, and trust that God’s mercy is ready the moment you return to Him.
