Deny Yourself and Choose Life

“IF ANYONE WANTS TO COME AFTER ME, LET HIM DENY HIMSELF ” – LUKE 9:23

A young farmer inherits fertile land but discovers the previous owner planted only quick-growing crops that exhausted the soil. To restore it, he must let the fields lie fallow for a season—no profit, no harvest. Neighbours call him foolish. But he knows that losing this year’s income is the only way to save the land for generations.

Like the farmer who surrenders short-term gain for lasting fruit, Jesus calls us to a daily paradox: losing to find, dying to live. The cross is not a one-time burden but a daily choice—to set down our need for control, approval, and security. Moses set the same choice before Israel: life and death, blessing and curse (Deut 30:19). “Choose life,” he urged. But real life, Jesus reveals, comes through surrender, not grasping. The world says: protect yourself, promote yourself, save yourself. Christ says: Let go of yourself. Today, Lent asks what you are clutching too tightly. Reputation? Comfort? A grudge? Your own plans? Lay it down. It is not loss; it is freedom. The cross looks like death, but it opens into resurrection. Choose life—not the easy life, but the real one.
