“REND YOUR HEARTS AND NOT YOUR GARMENTS.” – JOEL 2:13
A woman spends hours cleaning her kitchen for guests—polishing counters, arranging flowers. But the oven, long unused, hides a burnt smell she cannot erase. After everyone leaves, she finally scrubs it herself, alone, with no one to applaud. No one sees. But now the whole house smells clean.
Like the woman who finally cleans what no one sees, Ash Wednesday calls us not to public performance but to hidden honesty. Tearing garments is easy; everyone can see your sorrow. But tearing your heart—that quiet, unseen work—is what God desires. Jesus warns against fasting for praise, praying for admiration, and giving for recognition. These have their reward: applause, then silence. But the Father who sees what is hidden repays with something greater: Himself. Paul pleads, “Be reconciled to God” (2 Cor 5:20). Not perform for God. Return to Him. Today, Lent begins. Not with ashes on display, but with a heart turned inward. Find your secret place. Pray behind a closed door. Fast without announcement. Give without acknowledgment. Let your devotion be for God’s eyes only. He sees. He knows. He is already waiting.
