Beyond Surface Goodness

“UNLESS YOUR RIGHTEOUSNESS EXCEEDS THAT OF THE SCRIBES AND PHARISEES” – MATTHEW 5:20

A driving instructor tells a learner that passing the test is not the goal; safe driving is. The student memorises rules to scrape through the exam, but ignores habits that build awareness and patience. After passing, careless mistakes follow. The problem was not the rules, but aiming only for the minimum instead of real understanding.

Jesus makes it clear that He has not come to cancel the law but to fulfil it (Matthew 5:17–20). Like the learner driver who only aims to pass the test, it is possible to keep rules outwardly while missing their purpose. Christ calls us beyond the minimum. Anger, resentment, and hidden motives matter just as much as visible actions. Sirach reminds us that life and death are set before us; we are free to choose (Sirach 15:15–17). God does not force obedience, but invites wisdom. True righteousness begins in the heart and shapes our words, our relationships,s and our choices. The Spirit reveals this deeper way (1 Cor 2:10). Today, do not settle for surface goodness. Ask God to guide your heart. Choose the fuller path of love and integrity, and walk it with honesty.
