“A prophet is not without honour, except in his hometown.” – Mark 6:4
A mechanic brings his own car to the workshop where he has worked for years. Colleagues who trust him with customers’ vehicles now second-guess him, recalling his apprentice mistakes and overlooking his skill. The car leaves unrepaired—not for lack of knowledge, but because familiarity breeds dismissal, and pride closes the hood.
Jesus returns to Nazareth and meets resistance rooted in familiarity (Mark 6:1–6). Like the mechanic dismissed by his own colleagues, His neighbors reduce Him to what they think they know, closing themselves to grace. Their unbelief limits what they are willing to receive. David’s census reveals a similar temptation to trust numbers and control rather than God, followed by repentance and mercy (2 Samuel 24). Psalm 32 reminds us that healing begins when sin is admitted, not hidden. Faith requires listening for God’s voice even when it challenges our assumptions (John 10:27). Christ still teaches and heals, but hearts must open to recognise Him. Unrepentant pride can quietly keep miracles at a distance there. Today, notice where familiarity dulls faith. Choose humility over certainty. Let God surprise you again, and make room for His work.
