When Obedience Looks Like Madness

“When his family heard it, they went out to seize him, for they said, ‘He is out of his mind.’” – Mark 3:21

A gifted scientist, driven by a desire to cure a common illness, works tirelessly in her lab. She skips meals, forgets meetings, and neglects social manners. Concerned colleagues, seeing only her strange behaviour and the mess of her workspace, decide she has cracked under pressure. They plan an intervention, mistaking her deep focus for a mental breakdown.

Like the scientist misunderstood by her colleagues, Jesus’s devotion to His mission seemed like madness to those closest to Him. His family, seeing the crowds and His disregard for routine, tried to restrain Him out of concern. This shows the loneliness that often comes with a divine calling. Yet, Jesus does not falter. Similarly, David did not rejoice at Saul’s death but led his men in mourning (2 Sam 1:12), acting from a heart shaped by God, not ambition. If faithful obedience to God’s call brings misunderstanding, take courage. Stay grounded in the Father’s will. Zeal for the Kingdom may seem foolish to the world, but it is God’s wisdom. Keep your heart open to the Son (Acts 16:14b), not the voices of fear or custom.
