The Sabbath Was Made for Man

“The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.” – Mark 2:27

A skilled gardener built a strong trellis for his valued roses. With time, a keen apprentice started carefully cleaning the wooden frame each day, cutting any vine that touched it, thinking the structure itself was the goal. The gardener kindly corrected him: “The trellis exists only to help the roses reach the sun and bloom. You are serving the wrong master.”

Like the helper tending the trellis, the Pharisees missed the true purpose of God’s law, valuing ritual purity such as the Sabbath above human need. Jesus corrects them by citing David, who, in need, saw mercy as the law’s true goal (1 Sam 21:6). God’s commands are a framework of grace, meant to help us grow toward Him—not idols in themselves. As Samuel learned, “the Lord looks on the heart” (1 Sam 16:7), valuing loving obedience over rigid rule-keeping. Christ, as “Lord of the Sabbath,” reveals God’s true intent: laws are gifts for our good. Today, consider your relationship with God’s commands. Are they life-giving or a burden? Let the Lord enlighten your heart (Eph 1:18) to see His law as freedom, helping you flourish in His love and care for others.
