“New wine must be put into fresh wineskins.” – Mark 2:22
A collector shows a priceless, old violin. A skilled musician comes to play it, but first gently loosens each string. He explains: “The old tuning kept its form for display, but to handle the strain of real music and stay in tune with the orchestra, it must be fully re-strung and tuned again.”
Like the violin needing full re-stringing, Jesus teaches that His presence brings a new reality that needs a renewed heart. The Pharisees’ fasting and Saul’s partial obedience (1 Sam 15:22) were like old wineskins—fixed forms unable to hold the new wine of the Gospel. Christ, the bridegroom, brings a joyful closeness with God that old rituals cannot keep. Trying to attach this new life to an unchanged heart causes a tear, just as sewing new cloth onto old fabric weakens both. His word is ‘living,’ reading our hearts (Heb 4:12), and calling for complete renewal. Today, offer God your flexible heart, not only corrected behaviour. Do not cling to old religious forms if they resist the new life He offers. Let Him re-string your soul to carry the beautiful tension of His grace and sing in harmony with His will.
