Hear the Lord’s Voice First

“Speak, Lord, for your servant hears.” – 1 Samuel 3:9

Before a crucial performance, a violinist ignores the tuning backstage, focusing only on the sheet music. The first notes with the orchestra are painfully off-key. A wise mentor stops her, handing her a tuning fork. “First, listen to the true pitch,” he advises. “Your skill is worthless if you’re not first in harmony with the source.”

Like the violinist needing the tuning fork, we must learn to distinguish the Lord’s voice. Samuel’s patient response, “Speak, for your servant hears,” created space for God’s word. Jesus Himself modelled this. After healing “all who were ill” (Mark 1:34), He withdrew to pray—listening before acting. The disciples, energised by the crowd’s demands, wanted to return to work. But Jesus, tuned to the Father, knew His broader purpose: “Let us go on…” (Mark 1:38). Today, before you act, make Samuel’s prayer your own. In the quiet, ask the Good Shepherd to help you hear His voice (John 10:27). Let His word, not the clamour of demands, set the true pitch for your day. Your most effective service flows from that sacred alignment.
