“This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.” – Matthew 3:17
A skilled assistant manager trains a talented new employee, sharing skills and connections. When the employee is promoted above her, others expect resentment. Instead, the manager celebrates, knowing the team will succeed because of it. Her joy doesn’t come from her title, but from seeing the right person in the right place to fulfill the mission.
Just as the father in the workshop rejoiced at his son’s first, guided attempts, the Father’s voice at the Jordan declares His joy in Jesus before His public ministry truly begins. This shows a core truth of our faith: our identity as God’s beloved children is a gift, not a prize earned by effort. In our own baptism, we were welcomed into the divine “workshop”—the life of the Trinity—and given the Holy Spirit as our anointing and guide. Our mission, like Christ’s, is to go about “doing good” with the tools of grace we have received. Today, act from the steady truth of the Father’s delight. Let His affirming love, not your measured successes or failures, be the ground of your worth. As you take up your daily tasks, do so as a beloved child, anointed and equipped to bring His gentle justice and healing into the world.
