He Must Increase: Finding Joy in Humble Faith

“He must increase, but I must decrease.” – John 3:30

A skilled assistant manager trains a talented new employee, sharing skills and connections. When the employee is promoted above her, others expect resentment. Instead, the manager celebrates, knowing the team will succeed because of it. Her joy doesn’t come from her title, but from seeing the right person in the right place to fulfill the mission.

John the Baptist shows us true Christian joy and purpose. His mission was never about himself but about pointing others to Christ. His joy is complete when he hears the voice of the Bridegroom, not his own (John 3:29–30). This humble attitude reflects what John teaches about prayer: our prayers are heard when they follow God’s will, not our own desires (1 John 5:14). The goal is for Christ to grow in our lives and in the world, while our selfish ambitions fade. Today, ask yourself where you need to “decrease.” In a decision, a conflict, or a desire, can you step back so Christ’s love and wisdom can lead? True joy and answered prayer come from becoming the faithful friend who rejoices in the Bridegroom’s voice, knowing the mission is always His.
