“He saw and believed.” – John 20:8
A hiker found a dry stream bed but saw smooth, water-worn stones and lush moss and felt cool, damp air. He hadn’t seen the water, but its lingering presence was undeniable. He knew the stream was real because of what it left behind.
Like the hiker who believed in the stream by its evidence, John believed in the resurrection by what he saw in the empty tomb. He witnessed not Jesus Himself, but the powerful signs left behind—the grave clothes lying undisturbed. This tangible evidence led him to faith. His testimony in his first letter mirrors this: he proclaims what he has “heard… seen… and touched” (1 John 1:1) concerning the Word of life. John’s experience teaches us that faith often grows not from dramatic encounters, but from recognizing the clear evidence of God’s work. We may not see Christ physically, but we see His transforming impact—in changed lives, answered prayers, and the truth of Scripture. Look for the evidence He has left in your world, and let it strengthen your belief.
A Journey of Reflection and Action
Take a moment today to quietly reflect on the “lingering evidence” of Christ’s presence in your life—perhaps in answered prayers, transformed relationships, or moments of grace—journal how these signs have deepened your faith like John’s at the empty tomb, meditate on John 20:8 and the power of believing through what is seen and touched, pray for eyes to recognize God’s work around you, and share one piece of this evidence with someone to encourage their belief.
Join Us in Prayer
Loving Father, we thank You for the witness of St. John the Evangelist, who saw the empty tomb and believed, proclaiming the Word of life he had heard, seen, and touched. Open our eyes to the undeniable evidence of Your risen Son in our lives—the transforming grace, answered prayers, and living truth of Scripture—so that our faith may grow stronger each day. Draw us closer to Jesus, the living Word made flesh. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
