Which of the Two Did the Father’s Will

“Which of the two did the will of his father?” – Matthew 21:31

A parent asked two teens to tidy the garage. One grumbled “No way,” but later, seeing their parent exhausted, quietly did the chore. The other cheerfully said “Sure, Mom!” then got distracted and never lifted a finger. At day’s end, action mattered more than the initial answer.

Jesus presents this parable to religious leaders who honor God with lips but not lives. The first son represents those who initially rebel but later repent and obey—like the tax collectors and sinners who heeded John the Baptist. The second son represents those who say “yes” to God but whose lives show no change. Jesus’s startling conclusion is that “the tax collectors and prostitutes are entering the kingdom of God ahead of you” (Matthew 21:31). Our faith is measured not by our promises, but by our obedience. Advent calls us to move beyond good intentions. Is your spiritual life a polite “I go, sir” that leads nowhere? Or is it a life of actual repentance, humility, and action? God’s kingdom is built by those who do the Father’s will, not just those who applaud it.

A Journey of Reflection and Action

Take time today for quiet reflection, honestly examine where your words and actions diverge, journal your response to Christ’s call to obedience, sit prayerfully with the Gospel passage, and gently share this invitation to lived faith with someone who may need encouragement.

Join Us in Prayer

Lord Jesus, You see beyond our words and into our hearts; give us the grace to repent sincerely, to obey courageously, and to live faith that moves from intention to action, that Your will may take flesh in our daily lives. Amen.
