“Strive to enter through the narrow door. For many…will not be able.” – Luke 13:24
A musician decided to master the violin. She committed to practicing for one hour every morning before work, even when tired. Her friends watched TV or slept in, wondering why she didn’t choose an easier hobby. The consistent, demanding effort felt narrow, but it slowly led to beautiful, skilled music that the easier path would have never produced.
Jesus’ call to “Strive to enter through the narrow door” is a direct challenge to a passive faith. Like the musician who chose the demanding practice schedule, we must commit to the daily, active effort of discipleship. This striving—in prayer, virtue, and sacrifice—is not about earning the gift of salvation, but about actively cooperating with the grace of Christ, who is the true door. Following Him means resisting the wide, easy paths of cultural compromise. This effort is purposeful, for as Romans 8:28 promises, God is working all things for the ultimate good of conforming us “to the image of his Son.” Our commitment is the faithful response to the incredible value of our calling in Christ. The narrow way is the path of authentic life in Christ—committed, costly, and eternally secure. Will you follow the way?
