“… for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.” – Luke 12:40
An elderly father promised to visit his busy son. “I’ll come someday soon,” he’d say. The son, buried in work, kept postponing repairs on a broken porch step, thinking, “I’ll fix it before he comes.” One evening, a knock came. Rushing to answer, he tripped—just as his father stood at the door, disappointed.
This poignant story mirrors our relationship with Christ. The “broken step” represents our unresolved sins, neglected prayers, and postponed acts of love—things we promise to fix “someday.” We know the Lord is coming, yet we allow the busyness of life to lull us into a false sense of time. The tragedy is not His arrival, but our last-minute scramble and the shame of being caught unprepared. His knock is not the problem; our unreadiness is. This passage in Luke 12: 39–48 calls us to a deep examination of conscience: are we repairing what is broken in our spiritual lives, or presuming upon God’s patience? The time for preparation is not tomorrow but this very moment. Let us live with the tender urgency of children awaiting a beloved Father. Do not let the broken steps of sin and neglect trip you at the moment of grace.
