True Independence

“He shall be called a Nazarene” – Matthew 2:23

A nation marks its independence with parades and flags. Yet behind the music and colours, many whisper about what remains—division, inequality, corruption. In the crowd, a young man realises independence is more than freedom from the past; it is the choices each citizen makes daily. He whispers: “If change must come, it must begin with me.”

On this occasion of Nigeria’s independence, we specially highlight the event and every other African independence or challenge. Our churches and nations often face similar challenges—division, corruption, poverty, and weakened trust in leadership. Yet Jesus reminds us in His hidden life at Nazareth that God’s plan often unfolds quietly, shaping the ordinary with eternal purpose. Independence, then, is more than a public celebration—it is a personal responsibility to let Christ’s peace shape our choices. When individuals embrace justice, unity, and mercy, nations are transformed from within. For Nigeria, and for Africa as a whole, renewal begins with hearts rooted in Christ’s peace and courage. Africa’s freedom finds its truest strength when her people rise daily in Christ’s peace.

Lord Jesus, as we celebrate independence, remind us that true freedom is found in You. Give us courage to choose justice over corruption, unity over division, and mercy over hatred. May our lives reflect Your peace and transform our nations from within. Amen.
