Clean the Inside First: Living with Genuine Grace

“First clean the inside of the cup” – Matthew 23:26

A shop owner gathered his staff, reminding them to polish the glass jars in the display window every morning. “People notice what’s outside first,” he said, “so keep it shining.”
One afternoon, a customer walked in, drawn by the sparkle. He picked up a jar, opened the lid, and frowned—the inside was dusty and stale. Without a word, he placed it back and left.

Jesus’ words to the Pharisees remind us that outward appearance is never enough. They were careful about details like tithing herbs, yet neglected weightier things—justice, mercy, and faith (Matthew 23:23). It is like the shop owner who insisted his staff polish jars for the display, yet a customer, opening one, found it stale inside and walked away. In the same way, we may polish the surface of our lives with good impressions, but Christ looks deeper—into the heart. True holiness begins within, where thoughts and desires are formed, for “from the heart flow the springs of life” (Proverbs 4:23). When He cleanses us within, the outer life naturally shines with authenticity, reflecting His mercy and truth in ways that cannot be faked.

Let Christ cleanse the inside first—then your life will overflow with genuine grace.

A Journey of Reflection and Action

  • Take time to journal honestly about areas of your life that may look polished outwardly but feel “dusty” within.
  • Meditate on Matthew 23:26 and Proverbs 4:23, asking God to reveal your true heart.
  • Share in a trusted fellowship or group discussion about how Christ has worked in your inner life.
  • Practice daily prayer, inviting the Holy Spirit to cleanse and renew you from within.

Lord Jesus, cleanse me from the inside out. Remove every hidden stain of pride, fear, or pretence. Fill my heart with Your mercy, justice, and faith so that my life may overflow with authenticity and grace that honours You. Amen.
