“Is your eye evil because I am good?”
– Matthew 20:15 –
A teacher announces a surprise: every student, regardless of score, will receive full marks for their project. Some students beam with relief; others, who worked tirelessly, feel cheated. They whisper, “It’s unfair.” Yet the teacher calmly explains, “This was never just about grades, but about reminding you that learning is more than competition.”
This parable of the vineyard workers unsettles us because it overturns our natural sense of fairness. The labourers who worked from dawn felt entitled to more, yet the master’s generosity was the same for all. In Christ, we see this very heart of God—a grace that is not earned, but freely given. His grace is not a reward for the worthy; it is the gift that makes us worthy. His goodness is not diminished by sharing it widely; in fact, it reveals the abundance of His mercy. Like the boy who stumbled yet finished strong, God delights in honouring those the world may overlook. As Scripture reminds us, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble” (James 4:6). Envy blinds us, but gratitude opens our eyes to God’s goodness that always exceeds human calculations. Rejoice in God’s mercy today. His grace is not measured—it is multiplied.

Gracious Father, thank You for the gift of Your unearned grace. Forgive me for the times envy clouded my heart. Teach me to rejoice in Your mercy and to see Your generosity not as unfair, but as abundant and good. Humble me, Lord, and help me live with gratitude. Amen.
