“What good shall I do that I may have life everlasting?”
Matthew 19:16 –
A championship swimmer stands at the edge of the pool, clutching his gold medal. His new coach says, “To train with me, you’ll need to throw that in first – it’s weighing you down.” The swimmer hesitates: “But this proves I’m good enough!” The coach nods, “Exactly. My way requires empty hands.”
The rich young man came seeking eternal life, confident in what he had done. Like the swimmer with his medal, he believed his achievements proved he was worthy. But Jesus lovingly challenged him: “Go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, and follow me.” (Matthew 19:21) Eternal life isn’t earned by what we’ve done—it’s received by letting go of what keeps us from fully following Him. Our goodness, success, or status can become spiritual baggage, When Jesus calls us, He asks for open hands, not resumes. What medal are you clutching today? God isn’t asking you to prove your worth—He’s asking you to trust His. Let go. He’s waiting with open hands—and eternal treasure.

A Journey of Reflection and Action
To apply this message, take a moment to reflect on what “medals”—achievements, possessions, or status—you might be clinging to that hinder a full surrender to God. Journal about what it would look like to release these things and approach God with open hands. Meditate on Matthew 19:16-22, asking the Holy Spirit to reveal any spiritual baggage you may be carrying. Share this devotion with someone you know who struggles with performance or perfectionism, and discuss how to find your identity in Christ alone, rather than in your accomplishments.
Join Us in Prayer
Heavenly Father, we come to you with a desire for eternal life. We confess that we often clutch onto our achievements and our pride, believing that our own goodness can earn us a place with You. Forgive us for trying to prove our worth. Help us to let go of our spiritual baggage and surrender everything to Your loving hands. Grant us the courage to follow You with empty hands and an open heart, trusting that the eternal treasure You offer is far greater than any medal we could ever win. Amen.
