The Cross We Choose

“If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.”
– Matthew 16:24 –

A young nurse receives a tempting job offer abroad—better pay, easier shifts, and status. But at home, her aging mother needs daily care, and she’s the only one available. After much prayer, she declines the offer. Friends don’t understand. But deep inside, she knows she chose what mattered most—not ease, but love. In giving up something big, she gained something greater: peace.

When Jesus said, “Take up his cross and follow me” (Matthew 16:24), He wasn’t inviting us into comfort—but into purpose. True discipleship costs something—time, pride, ambition, but it leads to a gain the world cannot give. As Paul wrote, “I have suffered the loss of all things… in order that I may gain Christ” (Philippians 3:8). Like the nurse who chose to stay for love’s sake, discipleship involves self-denial, hard choices, and quiet sacrifices no one else may see. Our unseen sacrifices echo in eternity. Today, don’t run from the cross that love or faith requires. By following Christ fully, even at a cost, you gain what the world can’t offer—eternal worth and inner peace.

A Journey of Reflection and Action

Take time today to reflect on what “taking up your cross” means in your current season. Spend a few quiet minutes in prayer, asking God to reveal any area where He’s calling you to surrender or serve, even when it costs you. Journal about one choice you’ve made—or need to make—that prioritizes love over comfort. Meditate on Matthew 16:24 and Philippians 3:8 throughout the week, letting them shape your perspective. Share this message with a friend or small group, and encourage one another in living out costly obedience. Consider an act of love today that no one will see but God, and offer it to Him in faith.

Join Us in Prayer

Lord Jesus, give us the courage to follow You, even when the path is costly. Teach us to choose love over comfort, obedience over ease, and faith over fear. May our unseen sacrifices echo in eternity, and may we find our peace in You. Amen.
